Well that has changed...I think this was an under-rated series...

Which is odd, since it was episodes from Project X that were among the first Webserials to be featured videos on youtube...

I think there's less of a pressing desire to comment on this show because it has ended. I really enjoyed it. Its serious tone and slow-paced development were actually a little more to my taste than Cataclysmo.

That's probably due to the fact it was first shot as a feature-length movie...
I kind of thought the cuts were a little awkward but I agree with you, the sense of gravity was nice.

Cataclysmo is definitely my Saturday Morning Cartoon fix. I feel I should watch it while eating some form of Sugar Bomb cereal.

Oh man... now I really want to read Calvin & Hobbes before I go to bed.  My collection is around here somewhere...

What was that thing anyway?

As much as I enjoyed PX for its quality, pacing and style, it was never my favorite. Somehow the drama amidst a far-stretched subject (read: unexplained creature) seemed out of place. What the Bleep was that thing anyway? At times it seemed to take itself too serious. Maybe if instead of an incomprehensible being it had been a more human nemesis (terrorists, madman/men, etc) it would have felt more real to me. That it was shot as a full-length feature explains a lot of course, where pacing is concerned. Still, the acting was decent to good and the director certainly knows how to work his magic. As low-budget goes, this is a keeper. Just my worth of salt.

But, gorramit, what was that creature?!

From what I understand, there was some exposition in the original screenplay that had to be done away with due to various reasons that Josh or Kevin might be able to explain.  I don't know much, as PX was actually filmed a loong while ago, before I even stepped into Web Serials land.

I think it was filmed before WebSerials land even existed.

Haha, true.  It was filmed before some of us were even in college.

Well, I could write a book about all of the untold stories surrounding "Project X"--whether it's all of the behind-the-scenes drama getting the film made, or all of the many character and plot mysteries that we developed that never made it on screen. For awhile, there was even a sequel in the works that would have revealed the origins of the creature as well as what happened to David and Claire after the "incident" at Power Plant 67. Perhaps those stories will still play out in some form or another...

The film itself started out as a short film concept back in 2002 and it slowly developed into a feature film that we ended up shooting in January 2005. Back then, our intention was to release the film on the internet when it was completed--which was a relatively new and unprecedented concept at the time. As we worked on post-production though, internet video grew in popularity and YouTube entered the scene. Soon, we saw this huge interest in short videos online, while long-form content had very little appeal.

After a year of editing, I was unhappy with how the film was playing and re-conceived a large part of the story. In March of 2006, more than a year after production, we shot all of the flashbacks and the bookend sequences of the film and incorporated those (hopefully seamlessly) into the final film. By 2007, we'd rethought our distribution strategy and came up with the idea of "web serials"--our own unique take on web series, in which we could tell traditional, feature-length stories in short episodic videos. "Cataclysmo and the Time Boys" was produced in the spring of 2007 and then we launched both shows simultaneously in July of that year. The rest, as they say, is history!

And what a history it is. Thanks for the background info! I feel the  pick-up shots work seamless because the characters looked and acted differently... which is what you'd expect in a time difference. So chalk that one up as accomplished. It also gave the story so much more weight and depth -- and referencing historical figures always works, don't it? ;-)

Cool to read about the background on the making of project x. I disagree with the comment about making the antagonists some terrorists or robbers, and etc.---the fantastic and surreal seem to suit short films more.
